The Story

Standing quietly on Caldey Island, just off the Pembrokeshire coast, this little white lighthouse has watched over the sea for generations. There’s something about a lighthouse that has always felt comforting to me. A constant point of light and safety, whatever the weather is doing around it.

I shot Lookout on 35mm film during a summer visit to the island. Caldey is such a peaceful, fascinating place, and I love how the softness of the film gives the lighthouse a slightly timeless quality, as though the photograph could have been taken years ago.

I chose this black frame with its fine gold edge because I love the contrast against the white lighthouse and mount. It gives the photograph a stronger, slightly more traditional feel while letting that little patch of blue sky sit right at the centre of it all.
